Per this subreddit's advice I downloaded BitDefender and Sophos. When trying to install BD first, it requires me to uninstall Spybot or it cancels installation. Looking through this sub for advice, I didn't see a single mention of Spybot in the recent posts, so it made me wonder if it's basically crap now? I put it on my parents' and my daughter's computers about 2 years ago along with uBlock and (I think) Avast. If I need to change/fix everyone's computers, I'd like to know.I've used Spybot S&D for at least 6 or 7 years and it was amazing a long time ago.
It hasn't seemed to accomplish much of anything since I got this new PC and Win10. I'm not sure if it's because Spybot sucks now, or because my usage and browsing habits have changed and I'm older/wiser, or maybe because Win10 and other sites I frequent are just more secure than they used to be? I really don't know; I'm sort of ashamed I haven't kept up on the tech and software issues in recent years.Even if Spybot isn't particularly good, does it do anything better than the alternatives? Is it still useful to have installed, or just redundant?. After that new update they released I started having serious graphics card issues.
It shuts down if I turn on netflix, or have too many things working at once. Also it will take a second sometimes for my graphics related stuff to register. I thought it could be an outdated graphics card driver but I've updated it regularly. Since I started having problems nvidia has released 2 graphics card updates but the problem still exists. Before the update there was no problems at all.
So I'm not sure what really happened. But it started right after the big update they released.
So I'm pretty sure it has to do with that. My Network Security professor made us install Spybot S&D on our laptops in class as part of an assignment. It found nothing other than the typical 'cookies are bad' mumbo, and it was a real pain in the ass to uninstall. If you tried to uninstall it traditionally by using the uninstaller or Add/Remove Programs windows tool, it would re-install itself on reboot.I had to dig around the registry and remove all keys associated with that shit software in order for it to not reinstall itself again. Thank you everyone for your responses! After looking around a little more, I went with Sophos for now, and kept Spybot installed as an on-demand scan just in case. I probably don't need two AV's, but with a good new rig set up just the way I like it, I'd rather have the secondary option than not. I'll test out some others on my older computer and see what I really like and which ones would be easiest for my parents to use, but it seems BitDefender is one of the most-recommended.
Will be experimenting with that one too. Thanks again;.
